Unit Secretary - Med/Surg

The Unit Secretary is responsible for organizing and maintaining an accurate accounting of all necessary data. In collaboration with the healthcare team, the Unit Secretary will coordinate and prioritize patient, physician and staff needs. The key essential job functions of this role include customer focus and patient experience, communication, and time management.



Job Responsibilities/Duties

  • Performs clerical tasks in support of nursing services of assigned patient care area. Effectively interacts with patients, visitors, and other members of the health care team in order to support the delivery of quality patient care.
  • Has an understanding of department and company organization, operations and procedures.
  • Communicates principal's instructions or desires to various individuals and/or departments, and furnishes and obtains information from other principals.
  • Receives and screens telephone calls, letters, and/or visitors. Answers routine questions and furnishes information to save principal's time.
  • Schedules appointments and makes arrangements for meetings, conferences, and travel.
  • Organizes and maintains files of supervisor's correspondence and records, following up on pending matters.
  • Routes or answers routine correspondence not requiring supervisor's attention.
  • Prepares routine letters and memoranda for principal's signature.
  • Prepares special reports, gathering, and summarizing data.


Qualifications

Minimum Education: High School graduate or equivalent. Completion of arrhythmia recognition course with minimum of twenty (20) hours classroom instruction preferred.

Minimum Experience: One (1) year experience as a Unit Secretary in an acute care facility and/or the completion of an approved Unit Secretary program.

Req. Certification/Licensure: Current American Heart Association (BLS) Certification.
