Stationary Engineer

The Stationary Engineer is responsible for operating and maintaining stationary gas and oil-fired boilers and auxiliary equipment in supplying steam for other than power generating purposes, adjusts fuel and air, starts pumps, regulates steam flow, checks gauges, maintains and repairs equipment.

Job Responsibilities/Duties

  • Inspection, testing and maintenance of pressure vessels / boilers and emergency back­up, Fire alarm equipment.
  • Maintains, test and inspects / regulates water and air filtration / conditioning systems.
  • Act as first responder in an emergency situation in assessing building systems.
  • Operates, maintains, inspects and performs repairs and mechanical alterations to manual and automatic gas and oil-fired high-pressure steam or high temperature hot water boilers.
  • Operates, maintains, inspects and makes repairs to steam engines, motors, steam-reducing stations, expansion tanks, air compressors, supply and exhaust fans, pumps and valves, steam traps, water treatment systems, water heaters and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Adjusts, maintains and tests boiler and air-conditioning machinery, and mechanical, electrical or pneumatic control instruments and safety devices.
  • Tests boiler water, cooling tower and water from other systems, and adds corrective chemicals.


Minimum Education: High School diploma or equivalent required or job-related experience.

Minimum Experience: Two (2) years apprenticeship or equivalent on the job experience. Hospital experience preferred. 

Req. Certification/Licensure: Current California Steam Boiler Certification or equivalent City / CA State license.
