Supervisor Sterile Processing Department

The Supervisor of Sterile Processing ensures proper decontamination, and the inspection, cleaning and assembly and packaging of medical/surgical equipment to standards. Ensure a sterile and functioning supply of surgical equipment.



Job Responsibilities/Duties

  • The Surgical Processing  Supervisor must be able to respond appropriately to alarms on monitoring equipment, sterilization devices and telephone calls. The associate must be able to discern the difference in surgical instruments prior to assembly.
  • Provide hospital and affiliate facilities with processed materials and equipment ensuring a quality product for patient care by executing established procedures for decontamination, assembly, packaging and sterilization.
  • The Surgical Processing  Supervisor is accountable for the instrument assembly and preparation function which includes inspection and assembly of instrumentation sets used in the Operating Room as well as other departments in the hospital.
  • The Surgical Processing  Supervisor is accountable for the most technically complex function in SPD. Sterilization and the maintenance of sterility, as well as the specific procedures and process followed. Complete knowledge of instrumentation, and equipment used for sterilization, biologicals, protocols, as well as supplies is required. It is imperative that technicians apply knowledge of AAMI/AORN standards and the factors that affect the process of sterilization.
  • The decontamination function encompasses cleaning and disinfecting of reusable instruments, supplies and equipment used in surgical patient care. This process is pivotal to breaking the disease transmission chain and this is essential to infection control and sterility assurance. The Surgical Processing Supervisor is responsible for performing the above consistent with established guidelines and protocols and with mentoring staff on all requirements and standards of AAMI/AORN.


Qualifications

Minimum Education: High School Diploma. Must be certified from an accredited program for Sterile Processing Technician and or Certified Surgical Technologist with certification for SPD within one year of employment.  

Minimum Experience: Two to three (2-3) year’s healthcare or other related experience. Experience in operating sterilization equipment.

Req. Certification/Licensure: Registered Certified Central Service Tech through CBSPD or IAHCSMM. Certification as a Surgical Technologist also requires SPD certification within one year of employment.
