Pharmacist In Charge, Tier 1 - Full Time, Days, Variable (Hollywood)

The Pharmacist In Charge, Tier 1, is responsible for the management and strategic planning of clinical pharmacy services to ensure the highest quality of pharmacy technology and services. Performs as the designated Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) role and is responsible for compliance with all applicable laws and regulations for the practice of pharmacy. Facilitates development, implementation, and maintenance of systems that promote desirable patient outcomes using safe, cost-effective drug therapies.  Develops standards & testing procedures that meet the needs of patients and physicians.  Responsible for financial decisions, budgeting process, and the department's continuous effective operation, including ongoing performance improvement.  

Job Responsibilities/Duties

  • Prepares medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders and dispensing medications by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals. Monitors drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug interactions and reactions, and appropriateness of drug usage.  Facilitates the identification, resolution, implementation, and communication of cost-effective medication use issues in collaboration with the medical staff. Reviews the use of targeted medication to ensure compliance with current pharmacoeconomic programs. 
  • Directs development, implementation, and maintenance of clinical pharmacy services, ensuring optimal formulary compliance. Provides clinical consultation and clarification to practitioners. Suggests appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic alternatives to medical staff as needed.  Facilitates the development and implementation of treatment guidelines, protocols, formulary changes, and critical pathways.
  • Actively participates in the development and implementation of strategic plans, operational goals and objectives, and business initiatives. Demonstrates strategic thinking in planning, implementing and evaluating programs tied to future growth of the operations and revenue enhancement.  Develops and executes short- and long-term goals for the department consistent with established hospital/organizational goals and objectives.  Serves in a staff, clinical pharmacist role when needed.
  • Develops and maintains quality improvement activities and recommends / implements changes as appropriate. Assumes responsibility for quality assurance data and participates in the collection and evaluation of quality improvement data.  Monitors internal controls and seeks to resolve issues in a timely manner.  Serves as a secretary or active member of the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and/or Medication Safety Committee.  Ensure all pharmacy services comply with Federal, State, TJC, DEA, FDA, and CDPH regulations so the hospital is in total compliance with all rules and regulations.
  • Supports all integration and System level efforts and initiatives to drive clinical & operational harmonization and standardization.  Plans and monitors a pharmacy budget to meet system/hospital fiscal goals.


Minimum Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy recognized by the California State Board of Pharmacy required. Doctor of Pharmacy and/or pharmacy residency preferred. Master’s in business or Healthcare Administration preferred.

Minimum Experience: Five (5) years in hospital practice emphasizing clinical pharmacy, pharmacokinetics and drug information services, with at least two (2+) years previous management experience required. Ability to maintain flexibility and composure in a constantly changing environment. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English. Strong time management skills and ability to effectively prioritize tasks. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the organization. Previous experience at Director level preferred.

Req. Certification/Licensure: Licensed by the CA State Board of Pharmacy required.
