Laboratory Phlebotomist

The Laboratory Phlebotomist works under direct supervision, participates in activities including phlebotomy procedures, logging in patient specimens, adding fixatives and preservatives to specimens, smearing specimens onto microscopic glass slides, setup for microbiology, preparing reagents and any clerical duties.

Job Responsibilities/Duties

  • Verifies proper identification of each patient prior to performing phlebotomy. Checks patient name and medical record number on each phlebotomy label against the name and medical record number on the patient's wristband.
  • Correlates proper specimen, proper patient and proper test at all times. Accounts for all marked tests on the requisitions are actually ordered in LIS. Verifies correct patient name, medical record number and account number at the time of accessioning.
  • Assesses and processes requisitions and places in alphabetical order. Compiles lists and faxes previous day's requisitions.
  • Assesses phlebotomy area, controller's desk and outpatient phlebotomy areas for cleanliness, organization and adequate supplies.
  • Works as a team member with technologist and fellow support staff personnel to maintain production schedule.
  • Ensures patient cumulative results are charted accurately and timely.
  • Performs all data collections activities within time specified by department policy.
  • Delegates and/or asks for assistance as needed. When delegating, the employee assesses the task to be completed and available personnel's scope of practice.


Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Minimum Experience: Two (2) years clinical laboratory experience.

Req. Certification/Licensure: Current CA State Phlebotomy Certificate or LVN license; current CA BLS certificate required.
